Oh, absolutely! My group of friends loved him, but we liked all kinds of music. I attended DC Public Schools K through 12, my high school was at least 95% black (possibly 99% - I remember one white guy), but we listened to everything - Motown, the British groups, Bob Dylan, you name it. Any good music was fine with us.

Well in terms of rock music, you've got me feeling a little anxious and insecure here, because I don't know a lot of new artists by name! Currently in my iPod that might qualify: Foo Fighters, Deftones, Radiohead, Disturbed, John Mayer. I've been listening A LOT to The Smyrk's "New Fiction" - a black rock group I first heard (you guessed it) on the free album from Rob Field's blog. They're really good. What about you?

LOL, Mina! I don't have a really good sense of how Hendrix was received by black audiences when he came out. Where there other "folks" around when you heard him on that stereo system?

Being officially ancient, I remember the first time I heard someone play Jimi HendrIx on a good stereo system. (Yes, this actually was in the '60s! Hard to believe!) It completely knocked me off my feet. I always like those interviews with folks like Eric Clapton who say the first time they heard Jimi play, they went home and seriously considered giving up the guitar. There was no one quite like him.
